New York City, 1887. Invitation to Walt Whitman's private reception after his celebrated lecture, 'The Death of Abraham Lincoln,' at Madison Square Theatre on April 14, 1887. Whitman had given public readings of his Lincoln lecture, variously edited, since 1879; one version was published in Specimen Days in 1882-1883. Scheduled on the twenty-second anniversary of Lincoln's assassination, the 1887 event was staged as a benefit for the ailing Whitman, who remained seated throughout his sold-out tribute to the Union's 'Martyr Chief': 'there is a cement to the whole people, subtler, more underlying, than any thing in written constitution, or courts or armies - namely, the cement of a death identified thoroughly with that people, at its head, and for its sake.' As William Pannapacker notes, Whitman's passionate public identification with Lincoln was central to his emergence as 'The Good Gray Poet,' a national treasure: 'Whitman's experiments in self-creation finally succeeded with a major segment of the public when he enclosed his persona within the halo encircling the martyred President' (Revised Lives, 22). The New York audience for Whitman's performance included Mark Twain, John Hay, Augustus St.
Gaudens, James Russell Lowell, and Charles Eliot Norton; Andrew Carnegie could not make it, but purchased a box for $350. At the end of his performance, Whitman was surprised by a gift of lilacs from poet E.C. Stedman's young granddaughter, a reference to his great elegy for Lincoln, 'When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd.' In New York City for a single night, Whitman hosted a re Click Below for Full Description.

'Born in Barmen, the eldest son of a textile manufacturer in Westphalia, Engels (1820 - 1895) was trained for a merchant's profession. In 1842, Engels left for England to work in his father's Manchester firm. Already converted by Moses Hess to a belief in 'communism' and the imminence of an English social revolution, he used his two-year stay to study the conditions which would bring it about. From this visit, came two works which were to make an important contribution to the formation of Marxian socialism: 'Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy' (generally called the 'Umrisse') published in 1844 and The Condition of the Working Class in England, published in Leipzig in 1845.' (Jones, 159). The popular opinion of the American Indian has for generations been based upon prejudice and ignorance as thoughtless as it is unreasoning and unjust. The red man of America may be no saint, but he is at least a man and should not be condemned unheard.
He has his side of the story quite as much as has his white conqueror. Desire, acquisition, superiority, indifference these have been the steps toward the ostracism that has been visited upon the American Indian, denying him justice and opportunity for advancement since the earliest days of white occupation. It is these barriers to progress that have alike created and complicated the vexed Indian problem.

On November 11, 1887, four men were hanged for their supposed involvement in the Haymarket Riot; though evidence was sorely lacking, the jury was decidedly biased, and policemen charged with forging evidence, eight men were charged and convicted. Only two of the men were even present for the Riot, and those two were clearly visible on stage and clearly not involved in the errant bomb attack on police with which they were charged. After the execution of four of the defendants, the Mayor of Chicago pardoned the remaining convicts, calling the entire trial a farce.
In the immediate aftermath, the hangings sparked international outrage, brief riots, and labor union protests. His works include a commentary on Ibn Maliks Alfiyya, an elementary treatise on syntax entitled al-Irab an qawaid alIrab, some very profound grammatical riddles and two longer works, Qatr al-nada wa-ball al-sada and Shudhur al-Dhahab, which both follow the fashion of the time in consisting of a basic text and commentary by the same author.
