Please add a detailed description to posts and titles.READ THIS! I bought a new Stratocaster the other day and it arrived today.
I got it on Reverb from a shop here in Canada (but too far to visit myself), and it was listed as brand new. It's a Fender FSR 50's Classic Stratocaster, MIJ.a photo. It's gorgeous, I love the color combination. Ever since I started playing guitar, one of my dream guitars (let's be real, we all have plural of these) was a surf green Strat, and this is close enough to satisfy.!However, I notice the serial doesn't quite match up.
According to Fender's online serial lookup, the serial belongs to a Ritchie Kotzen Strat, completely different. JD18000779 is the serial as seen on the.I know with fakes it can be easy or hard to tell. Some tells are usually how the headstock has the logo/model printed, and sometimes on the bridge I've read? The headstock has it stickered on (hard to see but ) and the bridge. The 50's Classic series was made to vintage spec so the headstock being stickered instead of stamped makes sense.I messaged the shop and they warned I should have asked for paperwork beforehand and I should keep that in mind for next time. Despite what I perceive as a pretty rude and dismissive message back, they're of no help. I contacted Fender through their e-mail form and probably won't hear back for a bit.Is it possible Fender's serial lookup is incorrect?
I thought maybe it didn't play well with Japanese serials but the Aerodyne in the photo above works fine. The serial isn't even the right model, let alone colorway. I seem to be talking to multiple people from the shop. The original employee I was speaking to before buying was very courteous and transparent, but this new one was pretty short and didn't articulate the message how I imagine a business should. The guitar feels and plays well.
The finish is immaculate, so I'm lead to believe it's brand new as stated. Even if it was a swapped neck, the neck doesn't match anything but what I bought anyways. The only thing I notice that's off besides the serial is the tuners don't keep tune well, something I never associate with Fender.I really don't know what to make of it. I'm half tempted to bring it to my local shop and have them take a look at it. My time is limited on potential return, in retrospect it's crappy I got it just before the weekend as it cuts into the return window when Fender won't reply on weekend. I'm not sure where you are seeing an online lookup that gives a model from the serial. The Fender page I see here:only indicates that with the JD and eight digits, the first two digits are year of manufacture.
That's similar to the system Fender / Gretsch use on the Japanese models - the first letter is country and the second is the manufacturer. In this case, it might mean Japan Dyna.
(many Gretsches are JT for Terada, or D for Dyna)Fender rarely if ever serializes by model. Disclosure - I work for a Fender dealer, and handle a lot of Fender guitars of all ages. Just as you explained, that's the same process they did for me. They confirmed its authenticity and said it was a serial reduplication affecting a few lines of MIJ Stratocaster. They issued me a new serial but won't provide paperwork/certificate likewise, claiming MIJ doesn't come with a certificate to begin with so they don't have the power to generate one.It worries me because resale value can be impacted without proof. I guess I can use the e-mail correspondence as proof.
In any case, I'm a happy camper knowing it's real.:). I don’t understand why they don’t just send us a letter stating the new serial number as an update for the serial number found in the guitar. The person in Fender’s customer service said I’d get one, but I never did. I have since returned that Tele to get a Custom shop that used was going for much less than the American Pro stuff.

Anyway, I’m happy you got sorted out. Just enjoy the guitar and don’t worry too much about resale value. It’s a good looking guitar that I conjecture is super comfortable and easy to play.
